Myths on Eyelid Surgery Demystified
Eyelid surgery is a controversial topic. Laymen are confused about the purpose of blepharoplasty, the technical terminology for eyelid surgery. Review these myths and facts on eyelid surgery.
Myth #1 - Eyelid surgery does not serve any medical or health benefits.
Conversely, eyelid surgery can improve a patient’s vision.
Myth #2 - Eyelid surgery can amend dark under-eye circles, crow's feet as well as other wrinkles.
Eyelid surgery does not correct under-eye wrinkles, dark circles; however, it rectifies other characteristics that make people appear fatigued – such as:
- Drooping of upper lids
- Puffy bags
Myth #3 - Patients with extra fat or excessive skin around the upper and lower eyelids are not good candidates for eyelid surgery.
On the contrary, candidates with extra skin, fat and even muscle along the lower or upper eyelids are excellent candidates for eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
Myth #4 - For various ethnicities, eyelid surgery is not conducive for correcting eyelid shape.
Eyelid surgery can augment the eyelid creases of various ethnicities. For instance, in Asian patients, eyelid surgery can render an upper eyelid crease.
Myth #5 - Eyelid surgery is one facial surgery procedure that must be done alone.
Alternatively, eyelid surgery can be performed at the same time as other procedures such as brow lift or a facelift.
Myth #6 - Having eyelid surgery or a blepharoplasty can hinder one’s self-confidence.
Usually, patients, who undergo eyelid surgery, develop a new sense of confidence. The procedure can drastically improve one’s appearance.
Myth #7 - Eyelid surgeries are exceptionally risky.
In general, eyelid surgeries are safe and effective when performed by a licensed, experienced plastic surgeon. (As all medical procedures have a degree of risk, most complications can be avoided by following all the plastic surgeon's instructions before and after the blepharoplasty).
