A mastectomy can be a life-altering event that can make you feel as if your breast will never look the same again. At Five Towns Plastic Surgery, New York plastic surgeon Dr. Scheinman can help you on your journey toward breast reconstruction and recovery.
Who Can Benefit From Breast Reconstruction Procedure?
Not all women choose to undergo breast reconstruction following breast cancer, but many feel their scars are a constant reminder of the past. Breast reconstruction can restore your figure and help you move forward after breast cancer.
The ideal procedure for you will depend on whether it will no longer affect your cancer treatment. If you require radiation treatments, it may significantly impact the timing, and in most cases the type of breast reconstruction recommended. Dr. Scheinman will work alongside your oncologist to determine the breast reconstruction options available for you.
Sometimes performed in conjunction with your mastectomy, breast reconstruction can be performed in two ways: with a tissue flap reconstruction or an implant-based reconstruction. These methods can be performed alone or combined to achieve your goals and depending on your situation may require multiple procedures to achieve a satisfactory outcome.
What to Expect During Your Breast Reconstruction in New York
During flap-based breast reconstruction, Dr. Scheinman will harvest tissue from one part of your body (e.g., abdomen, back or buttocks) and transplant it to your chest to create a new breast.
During breast implant reconstruction, we insert a saline or silicone breast implant behind the chest muscle. If you do not have enough tissue left following your mastectomy, a tissue expander, similar to a balloon, may be inserted several weeks in advance to slowly help your body create additional skin to support the breast implants.
After Your Breast Reconstruction Surgery in NY
Recovery will vary depending on the type of surgery you underwent. It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling and general discomfort. Most patients are required stay in the hospital for the first few days of recovery. You will need to wear a special surgical bra for the first few weeks. You can gradually begin resuming light physical activity right away, but you should plan on at least of month off from work and other normal routines. Rigorous physical activity should avoided for 6-8 weeks. Dr. Scheinman will provide you with specific aftercare instructions before you leave the hospital.
